Chapter Five

Silla yawned widely as she stood at the french doors on the ground floor, watching the pool. It was still pretty early in the morning, and she was an early riser. She wasn’t feeling particularly refreshed, though, because she hadn't slept last night.

She’d tossed and turned and had been jolted awake frequently—probably because so much had happened, and she was still reeling from the reality of it all. She stroked her belly again, unable to believe that it was all real and it was happening and she had actually gone out and done something like this. She grinned, proud of herself for finding a way to make her dreams come true.

However, her family would be scandalized if they found out about this. She didn’t care. She was doing what she had to do, and what she thought was right, and that was all that mattered. Survival had been the most important thing for her as long as she could remember, and this was survival 101. This had to be done. Or her aspirations would have to halt. That she wouldn’t allow.

A shuffling sound interrupted her reverie and she whirled around. Even though she’d expected him to be inside what was his house, she was a little taken aback momentarily.

“Good morning,” he said with a grin.

Silla quickly let her eyes wander over his freshly shaven face, his suit, his bright eyes that were slightly swollen from sleep. It made her smile, and it was endearing to learn something about him. His eyes were swollen early in the morning. Mental note made.

He chuckled. “I’m glad to see you’re enjoying your first morning here. “

Silla blushed and looked away, trying not to think he meant she was checking him out. “I was just…”

“How did you sleep?”

Silla grimaced. “Terribly.”

His face fell. “Why? Did you need anything? Was the room too cool?”

“No, no. I think it was the new place and the new bed, and the new everything. Plus I had a lot to think about.”

He nodded. “It will get better.”

“Yes.” She smiled openly. “It will. I’m glad I’m here, and I’m glad we’re doing this.”

“So am I.” He paused. “Have breakfast with me?”

Silla sat down at the outdoor table where he led her and watched the housekeeper lay breakfast before them. Once again, extravagant food. Once again, too much. She cringed at the thought that so much of it would be wasted. There was only so much the two of them could eat.

“Silla, you haven’t been introduced to our housekeepers, Mrs. Craddock and Mrs. Wesley. They will be tending to anything you want done, and if you need to go anywhere today, the chauffeur is on call. Just tell either of the housekeepers and they’ll arrange everything.”

“Okay,” Silla said, a little overwhelmed. “When do you think you’ll be back?”

Maxwell’s eyes narrowed, his cup of coffee halfway to his mouth. Silla flushed beetroot red, and her spoon clattered to her plate. “I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean it… That came out a little odd. I was just kind of getting…”

Maxwell snapped out of it instantly.
